20 Mar 2009Cross-posted on The-F-Word.org Eating disorders are often thought to be a “rich white girl’s disease,” but a new study shows that black girls and girls from low-income families are more likely to develop bulimia than their wealthier white counterparts. The study is based on information from a government database of 2,300 girls from schools in [...]

14 Mar 2009In this economic climate, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by a PRNewswire article, titled, “Future of Global Recession Revealed in… a Diet Book?“ while perusing the web for newsworthy eating-disordered articles. Using the Pen and Paper Diet as a platform on which to parallel eating disorders and the disordered (or diseased) economy, the article [...]

5 Feb 2009In the last few months, I’ve had the good fortune of not being exposed to as much office “fat talk,” now that I’m down to part-time status. Most of the days I work are pretty heavy days and most people don’t have a lot of time for chit-chat. When they do, dieting is fortunately not [...]

23 Jan 2009Here’s a look at related headlines making the news… PsychCentral takes a look at magazines for teen girls and finds dangerously mixed messages about weight and body image. Read and be outraged and then subscribe to New Moon magazine instead. British mom Julie Lou Weston overcame her struggles with bulimia and negative body image and [...]

3 Jan 2009My next review was originally going to be Hunger Point, but the movie is currently not on YouTube. Therefore, I opted for The Karen Carpenter Story instead. Click the link and watch the movie on YouTube first if you don’t want spoilers! What I like about this movie: Okay, first off, I must say that [...]
Hoorah! The largest health insurance provider in New Jersey agreed this week to settle a class action lawsuit brought by parents of children suffering from anorexia. As part of the settlement, Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey has agreed to pay claims totaling $1.2 million to 500 patients with eating disorders, as well as [...]

3 Dec 2008Earlier this summer I reported on Illinois’ House Bill 1432, which mandates health insurance companies to pay for the treatment of anorexia and bulimia. Now another new program offers help to the estimated 1.1 million Illinoisians with an eating disorder. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) and volunteers from Chicago-based Timberline Knolls have teamed up [...]

23 Nov 2008Anorexia and bulimia often get the lion’s share of eating disorder attention and resources, but its estimated that the numbers of people with binge eating disorder eclipses both of these conditions. Binge eating disorder rarely makes the news, it seems, but there’s new articles up over at Eating-Disorder.com on what constitutes BED and on the [...]

11 Nov 2008A post by Emmy at Frozen Oranges made me think about how the declining U.S. economy is affecting those of us with eating disorders. Consider the following: Rising prices are making it more difficult for everyone to afford the necessities, including food. For those in recovery, the inability to buy enough food might trigger a [...]

31 Oct 2008Health insurance and eating disorders has always been a very difficult issue to navigate, and one that needs much attention and reform. I know that for me, were it not for the resources available through my university, I would not have had access to any kind of treatment. A recent New York Times article discusses [...]
This is a blog where a roster of three regular writers and several guest writers comment on the latest news about eating disorders. It isn’t just a news feed, nor a personal journal – it’s a hybrid of both. We discuss the news with our own personal spin.
We aren’t journalists or outsiders looking in. We have eating disorders. We know about this illness because we live it. Some of us are thoroughly active in our eating disorders while some are in recovery. Most are in some state in between.
Nothing is off-limits in terms of coverage. We write about everything from the onset of eating disorders to the long-term consequences thereof. We write about all eating disorders, not just anorexia and bulimia. And we write media reviews, short stories, and whatever comes to mind in relation to current events.
This does mean, however, that we may bring up some sensitive topics — things like abuse, rape, self-injury, etc., so tread carefully. We’ll tag posts with the appropriate warning label whenever possible.
Readers are encouraged to comment and participate in the discussion. Just click on the “comments” link under any entry.
