It’s not often that I will talk about a book before its release, but this one sounds like it has promise. Set for a September 9 release, Going Hungry is a collection of essays about people’s recovery from anorexia. And, according to this Newsweek article, these stories are not written by the usual suspects – [...]

Since Wasted by Marya Hornbacher is one of the most highly-regarded memoirs on eating disorders out there, I figured this would be worth mentioning. From her website, maryahornbacher.com: Marya’s new memoir Madness: A Life (Houghton Mifflin) is an intense, beautifully written book about the difficulties, and promise, of living with mental illness. It is already [...]

Here’s another new eating disorders-related book to look for, Inside Out: A Portrait of an Eating Disorder by illustrator Nadia Shivack. Shivack offers a personal narrative and graphic-novel-style depiction of her eating disorder, including anorexia and bulimia. Chronicled on napkins, notebook paper, or whatever scrap was available, Nadia’s story unfolds as she endures it. She [...]

I wish I could find fault with Courtney Martin’s latest book, Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters. I wish I could point to page and chapter, and say “you’re wrong.” But I’m reminded daily of just how true Martin’s words are. Have you ever wished you could travel back in time, to the girl you once were, [...]

About this blog

This is a blog where a roster of three regular writers and several guest writers comment on the latest news about eating disorders. It isn’t just a news feed, nor a personal journal – it’s a hybrid of both. We discuss the news with our own personal spin.

We aren’t journalists or outsiders looking in. We have eating disorders. We know about this illness because we live it. Some of us are thoroughly active in our eating disorders while some are in recovery. Most are in some state in between.

Nothing is off-limits in terms of coverage. We write about everything from the onset of eating disorders to the long-term consequences thereof. We write about all eating disorders, not just anorexia and bulimia. And we write media reviews, short stories, and whatever comes to mind in relation to current events.

This does mean, however, that we may bring up some sensitive topics — things like abuse, rape, self-injury, etc., so tread carefully. We’ll tag posts with the appropriate warning label whenever possible.

Readers are encouraged to comment and participate in the discussion. Just click on the “comments” link under any entry.
