In this economic climate, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by a PRNewswire article, titled, “Future of Global Recession Revealed in… a Diet Book?“ while perusing the web for newsworthy eating-disordered articles.  Using the Pen and Paper Diet as a platform on which to parallel eating disorders and the disordered (or diseased) economy, the article [...]

My next review was originally going to be Hunger Point, but the movie is currently not on YouTube. Therefore, I opted for The Karen Carpenter Story instead. Click the link and watch the movie on YouTube first if you don’t want spoilers! What I like about this movie: Okay, first off, I must say that [...]

Anorexia and bulimia often get the lion’s share of eating disorder attention and resources, but its estimated that the numbers of people with binge eating disorder eclipses both of these conditions.  Binge eating disorder rarely makes the news, it seems, but there’s new articles up over at Eating-Disorder.com on what constitutes BED and on the [...]

A post by Emmy at Frozen Oranges made me think about how the declining U.S. economy is affecting those of us with eating disorders. Consider the following: Rising prices are making it more difficult for everyone to afford the necessities, including food. For those in recovery, the inability to buy enough food might trigger a [...]

Health insurance and eating disorders has always been a very difficult issue to navigate, and one that needs much attention and reform. I know that for me, were it not for the resources available through my university, I would not have had access to any kind of treatment. A recent New York Times article discusses [...]

Amanda-Jane Hazelwood, a nurse in England, recently released a study about the effectiveness of using text messaging as a form of therapy. She has been using the technology in this context for the last three years and says that text messaging is beneficial. Her patients agree that the technology is useful in many ways. Perhaps [...]

After two weeks of contentious and high-spirited debate, the federal government’s ambitious and historic plan to bail out the nation’s financial system was signed into law by President Bush on Friday. While H.R. 1424 is intended to resuscitate the nation’s ailing financial health, the act also helps to improve the nation’s mental health: Amongst the [...]

I bring you good tidings from the state of Illinois, where House Bill 1432 has been passed by the Illinois House of Representatives! I reported on this bill in June while it was “under review” by Ill. Governor Rod Blagojevich and encouraged readers to contact the governor encouraging him to sign it into law. Only [...]

I was just about to post a reply to Rachel’s thread about antidepressants on her blog, The F Word, when I realized that my reply was going to be a post in and of itself. Why not put it here instead? So I’m stealing her topic. Because eating disorders occur so frequently with conditions like [...]

Former British deputy prime minister John Prescott recently admitted his 10-year battle with bulimia. He is not the typical teenage girl people associate with the eating disordered stereotype; he is 69 years old, and – get this – he looks like a real person. He’s not a former model/actor/glamorous beauty on the cover of the [...]

About this blog

This is a blog where a roster of three regular writers and several guest writers comment on the latest news about eating disorders. It isn’t just a news feed, nor a personal journal – it’s a hybrid of both. We discuss the news with our own personal spin.

We aren’t journalists or outsiders looking in. We have eating disorders. We know about this illness because we live it. Some of us are thoroughly active in our eating disorders while some are in recovery. Most are in some state in between.

Nothing is off-limits in terms of coverage. We write about everything from the onset of eating disorders to the long-term consequences thereof. We write about all eating disorders, not just anorexia and bulimia. And we write media reviews, short stories, and whatever comes to mind in relation to current events.

This does mean, however, that we may bring up some sensitive topics — things like abuse, rape, self-injury, etc., so tread carefully. We’ll tag posts with the appropriate warning label whenever possible.

Readers are encouraged to comment and participate in the discussion. Just click on the “comments” link under any entry.
