22 Dec 2008Courtney Martin’s “Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: How the Quest the Perfection is Harming Young Women” was released in paperback recently and since I already have the hardback edition, I’m giving away the paperback I picked up. For those of you unfamiliar, Martin is a writer, teacher and feminist activist in her twenties. In a book [...]
Newsweek has an interesting article out on how pro-ana groups are coming out of the anonymous shadows of free-hosted websites and into the very public arena of Facebook. Anti-pro-ana Facebook groups still outnumber pro-ana sites on Facebook by a wide margin, but increasing numbers of pro-ana groups are now being launched on the site, with [...]

24 Aug 2008Have researchers found a magic pill to cure obesity? Maybe, if you’re a binge-eater. Researchers have found that a recently-developed drug for epilepsy helps obese rats lose weight. The drug, Vigabatrin (GVG), also shows promise in treating drug addiction. Tests currently being conducted on cocaine and methamphetamine addicts are determining whether GVG successfully prevents the [...]

11 Aug 2008“-rexia:” An overused buzzword that is to disordered eating what Watergate is to political scandal. Delaney and I must be on the same wifi wavelength because our reactions to the new “pregorexia” term are much the same. Read more about this “new” disorder in this MSNBC story on how celebrity mamas are fueling postpartum baby-body [...]

6 Aug 2008The international Olympic Games is a time to celebrate individual and team accomplishments with nationalistic fervor. We marvel at the incredible strength, dedication and perseverance of athletes who perform seemingly superhuman feats with aplomb — like those featured here and here. What’s not often discussed are those cases of (primarily female) athletes for whom the [...]
(Editor’s note: This is the first of what I hope will be many articles from Meg, who has joined us on Disordered Times. Welcome, Meg!) I don’t know why I write New Year’s resolutions. I never keep them. Does anyone? The only thing I could think of to write was “lose 60 lbs.” I wrote [...]

27 Nov 2007It’s always an interesting study in sociology to examine how popular mass media interprets the concept of “Body Image” campaigns. Take the celebrity news and gossip show Access Hollywood, for example. Now in its twelfth season of syndication, the popular newsmagazine and half-hour television show has declared November to be Body Image Month. Here’s a [...]
The city I live in is hosting a women’s expo this weekend, with Erin Brockovich headlining the event. The publicity has been everywhere, and the newspaper I work for has sponsored the event heavily. We published a guide that told readers what they could expect to find at the weekend-long bonanza, along with articles that [...]
This is a blog where a roster of three regular writers and several guest writers comment on the latest news about eating disorders. It isn’t just a news feed, nor a personal journal – it’s a hybrid of both. We discuss the news with our own personal spin.
We aren’t journalists or outsiders looking in. We have eating disorders. We know about this illness because we live it. Some of us are thoroughly active in our eating disorders while some are in recovery. Most are in some state in between.
Nothing is off-limits in terms of coverage. We write about everything from the onset of eating disorders to the long-term consequences thereof. We write about all eating disorders, not just anorexia and bulimia. And we write media reviews, short stories, and whatever comes to mind in relation to current events.
This does mean, however, that we may bring up some sensitive topics — things like abuse, rape, self-injury, etc., so tread carefully. We’ll tag posts with the appropriate warning label whenever possible.
Readers are encouraged to comment and participate in the discussion. Just click on the “comments” link under any entry.
